Energy Savings Continue to Increase at the South Peace Community Multiplex

Published: Apr 22, 2015

DAWSON CREEK, BC – Global Spectrum Facility Management in conjunction with the City of Dawson Creek is committed to reducing our environmental impact, lowering operational costs and being seen as a leader for energy management in the industry, the community, and the Province.

2014 saw continued savings in electricity for the facility as new projects were completed to reduce electricity use.  2014 projects included changing all exterior complex lighting to LED lights, installing variable frequency drives on the lap pool and leisure pool and on the waterslide at the Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre.  The variable frequency drives allow for better control of circulation pumps and other equipment as they can be adjusted during slower or nonuse days. In addition, the interior lighting of the Encana Events Centre and the Aquatic Centre was changed to LED and to sensor controls, and upgrades were made to the Aquatic Centre’s heat recovery controls.

Overall, 2014 saw a 1.1% decrease in electrical consumption compared with 2013, marking this the fourth year in a row that consumption has been decreased. While electrical consumption has decreased, the South Peace Community Multiplex has seen a rate increase of 9% in April of 2014.

With natural gas, we did see an increase in costs but continued to have a decrease in consumption.  Other factors for this increase include more operational days, colder weather than previous years and higher costs for natural gas. Even with the higher costs, 2014 was the third lowest year in natural gas costs since 2008.

Overall consumption and use of energy has decreased in the facility.  2014 was the second lowest since year 2008 in utility costs.  This is due in part to the long term support from Global Spectrum Facility Management and the City of Dawson Creek with upgrades to equipment, lighting and other investments.  With the continued work of Global Spectrum’s Chief Power Engineer Tylor Hawkins and the City of Dawson Creek’s Energy Manager Peter Nilsen we continue to make strides in reducing the energy use and decreasing our energy consumption footprint.

“We have a dedication to the City of Dawson Creek and the residents to ensure the operation of the South Peace Community Multiplex and the Encana Events Centre can continue for years to come.  With the additional investments made to further enhance equipment and lower consumptions, we have shown that we can create change and further the longevity of the facility,” said Global Spectrum Facility Management’s Ryan MacIvor, General Manager for the Encana Events Centre. “With the great work from our staff, the City of Dawson Creek staff and City Council, we can see our impact on the environment to further decrease while seeing an increase in savings.”

“Energy rates keep increasing year over year, but we are able to make investments in the facilities to offset these increases.  There is an upfront cost to make these investments but the payback is remarkable,” commented Peter Nilsen, Energy Manager, City of Dawson Creek.
